The International Coir Museum is established for showcasing the coir industry over the ages with the latest developments which has brought in a revolution. Coir is coconut fibre, extracted from the outer husk of coconut. The museum sets out the history of the manufacture and uses of coir, such as beds, mats and carpets, which were still being made on the premises.

This museum is a beauty spot in the tourist map of Alleppey.

The museum also show cases the traditional processes and development of coir industry including retting and fibre extraction, advent of mechanization in coir sector etc.There is souvenir shop attached to the Museum where visitors can have the joy of shopping a wide range of coir handicrafts, coir doormats, coir ornaments etc.entrance fee of just INR 100.There are some figurines like Taj Mahal, Lotus temple, Ganesh statue etc. The process of getting coir from coconut waste is explained and there are various machines (on exhibit) for this purpose.

Outside the museum, there was adequate parking space. There was also a small garden with swings for kids – that could have been possibly better maintained. The museum closing hours are probably 5 in the evening so take care of that in your plan.

The Museum has artistic creations of coir material of different human nature, deities and art work.

Open 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Mondays.
